MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ball State falls in overtime to St. John's

Randy Davis dribbled to the top of the key and faded away for a game-winning shot. It fell short, and so did Ball State's hopes of pulling out a win.

After coming back from 13 points down in the second half, Ball State lost in overtime 78-73 to St. John's in the first game of the Great Alaska Shootout.

The Cardinals led by six with 2:15 remaining in the second half, but couldn't hold off the Red Storm, losing by five.

"We were right there and had a quality look at the end of the game that we just didn't convert, coach Billy Taylor said. "Tonight was disappointing as we thought we had the game in hand after showing a lot of resiliency and heart to battle back."

Ball State trailed going into halftime 34-22. With 15 minutes left in regulation, the Cardinals went on a 24-6 run to take the lead. St. Johns tied the game with 33 seconds left and never gave it back. It controlled overtime and iced the game with six free throws at the end.

It marked the 14th straight time Ball State failed to beat a team from the power six conferences. Its last win was against Nebraska in 2002.

Jesse Berry scored a career-high 18 points in the loss, including three 3-pointers to lead the Cardinals. The team shot 50 percent for the game.

The team is now 2-2 after losing their last two games.
