Indiana jobless rate drops below double digits

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana's unemployment rate dropped to 9.9 percent for October, falling below double digits for the first time since March.

The employment report released Tuesday by the state Department of Workforce Development showed Indiana's jobless rate down from 10.1 percent in September. The report says 288,000 Hoosiers were looking for work last month and that total non-farm employment increased by 6,800.

The national unemployment rate for October was lower than Indiana at 9.6 percent.

Elkhart County at 12.9 percent and Fayette County at 12.8 percent had the state's highest jobless rates. The statewide unemployment rate peaked at 10.6 percent in June 2009.
