Reports of the dismissal of coach Stan Parrish circulated throughout the internet Monday afternoon, but Parrish down played them to the Ball State Daily News later in the night.
"Those are just rumors," he said.
ESPN.com college football reporter Joe Schad tweeted Parrish would not return next season.
Athletic director Tom Collins did not return multiple phone calls seeking comment.
Fox Sports columnist Jason Whitlock was among those tweeting Parrish had been fired. Whitlock is a former Ball State player and outspoken critic of Parrish. Monday evening he tweeted "Sweet Jesus! Yes Lord! Just heard Stan Parrish has been fired! Swear to God there r tears steaming down my face. The nightmare is over!!!"
Parrish held his weekly news conference earlier in the day, discussing normal topics such as Ball State's loss Saturday to Northern Illinois, recruiting and plans for the offseason. But soon after speaking with the media for 26 minutes, the first reports of his firing began.
Parrish has a 6-19 record in two years as the Cardinals' head coach. Ball State finished 4-8 this season, an improvement from its 2-10 record last year.
Parrish was promoted to head coach from offensive coordinator after Brady Hoke left Ball State for San Diego State in December 2008. He signed a four-year contract worth $350,000 a year.
