Ball State's University College celebrated its 25th anniversary Friday with remarks from key university leaders.

President Jo Ann Gora, Associate Provost and Dean of University College Marilyn Buck and Associate Dean of University College Michael Haynes spoke about the university's efforts to help students in various ways.

University College, which includes the Learning Center, Academic Advising and the Office of Academic Systems, provides students free tutoring, supplemental instruction, planning schedules, transfer systems and completion of the annual master schedule.

Through the services, students can receive academic suggestions from staff. It is specifically geared toward freshmen, athletes, students with disabilities and non-traditional students.

Gora said the Learning Center has provided students with the necessary tools to go through their academic year.

"More than 42 percent of freshman students are using the Learning Center services, and I think that it's incredible how important the Learning Center is to the academic survival of students," she said.

During an academic year, the Learning Center staff provides help to about 4,000 students, including more than 1,100 one-on-one sessions. About 2,100 students attend supplemented structural sessions and 400 students attend the workshop and other academic issues according to Ball State's website.

"It is wonderful for the work that has taken place in Learning Center," Gora said.

This year, the National College Learning Center Association recognized the Ball State Learning Center with the 2010 Outstanding Learning Center Award.

Gora said the work of University College has been critical to the future of Ball State.

"Twenty-five years ago, life was very different," she said. "But what has remained steady and true over the 25 years is the University College's commitment to students and supports they provided to students."

After the president's remarks on the anniversary, Haynes gave his thoughts on working with University College for 25 years.

"The energy here, purposefulness and joy, they are all very special," he said. "University College is a place grounded in teaching and learning. The institution provides focus on students."
