Abandoned Muncie GM receives $5.29 million for cleanup

Four years after it closed, Manual Transmissions of Muncie is just a slab of concrete, said the environmental project manager leading the clean-up efforts.

The once-thriving, abandoned auto parts shop will be revisited over the next couple years as crews commissioned by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management clean up the site.

Muncie's abandoned General Motors plant at 1200 W. 8th St. is among six to receive federal funding to clean up the site as part of the company's buyout that was announced June 1, 2009. The entire allocation totals $25 million for cleanup efforts around Indiana, and $5.29 million will be used at the Muncie site.

Dave Favero of Favero Geo Sciences, who will organize the cleanup, said the money will be used mainly to correct the contamination in the soil and groundwater in the area.

"We're using a phased approach," Favero said. "Everything will be done under supervision of IDEM."

Favero, who oversees cleanup efforts around the Midwest, said the project could last several years. For the time being, he's working on initial investigations and looking through old documents and reports from his office in Springfield, Ill.
