The Ball State University Singers will find out Friday if they're heading for New York City.
The Singers will appear on the "Today" show from Sursa Performance Hall via satellite Friday when the winner of the Today Show's Choir Showdown will be announced. They were selected as one of four finalists for the contest Thursday.
Alan Alder, University Singers acting director, said one of the performers heard about the contest and came to him with the idea.
"Everyone was excited when we got the idea to enter the contest," he said. "Then to see their reaction when they found out we were finalists; it was just priceless."
According to a press release, the finalists were selected on reviews of video submissions from show choirs across the country. The winner will be based on Internet votes cast Thursday.
If the University Singers win, they'll perform on "Today" Nov. 11.
Alder said University Singers aims to represent and promote Ball State in a positive light.
"Part of the reason we exist is to get the Ball State name out there, not just in Indiana, but in surrounding states and across the nation," he said. "On a personal level, I want this for [the University Singers] more than anything. They're the ones we put on the stage. They're the ones performing, learning the choreography. As a director, it's heartwarming to see them succeed this way."
The other finalists in the contest are the Butler Headliners from Butler Community College in Kansas, Dimensional Harmony from Boynton Beach High School in Florida and Celebration Show Choir from Mars Hill Bible School in Alabama.
