The Heorot hosts an open mic at 'Poetry Night'

Different styles of writing blend at event

This story has been altered from its original version, which may have been ambiguous to the reader. Art and Soul by Phoebe Gallery is still hosting the Third Thursday Poetry Slam. It has not been canceled or moved. The Heorot's Poetry Night is a different open mic event.

From sonnets to hip-hop poetry, the Heorot's Poetry Night offers local artists a place to express their works and words.

Going into its 10th month of existence, Poetry Night at the Heorot is an open mic setting for poets and writers to read their pieces. Organizer Debra Dragoo said the event was moved to the Heorot due to a growth in attendance.

"I have moved it to the Heorot as the old venue, Art & Soul Gallery, was too small," Dragoo said.

Poetry Night usually begins with a live acoustic performance at 6:30 p.m. During this time, poets can sign up to participate in the open mic session that takes place from 7 to 9 p.m.

Dragoo said this open mic time usually sees a diverse range of ages, as well as poetry styles.

"The current poetry night has seen approximately 60 people in attendance with about 20 spoken word artists sharing their talent," She said. "From 15-year-old to nearly 80-year-old poets, an amazing mix."
