With a full crowd of singing, screaming and cheering fans, 21 acts performed at the 2010 Air Jam, Homecoming's traditional dance and lip sync competition.
Each group put together musical pieces from all genres to dance to. Groups were judged on creativity, execution, lip syncing ability and representing Homecoming's the "Rock the Red" theme.
While each group interpreted "Rock the Red" differently, people in the crowd were also dressed in red, jumping out of their seats to support their favorite group.
The judges were Ball State alumni who came back to participate in Homecoming once again.
Outlet, a hip-hop group, won the independent and overall awards for the third year in a row. Music education and dance major Jerico Hughes said Outlet just wanted to present a show with its unique flair.
"We wanted to rock the red and do it with our style," Hughes said. "So we tried to make you think we were doing something and then we'd do something else."
As soon as the group approached the stage, the crowd started screaming and cheering. Some people even started dancing and singing along. By the sound of the audience, it was clear Outlet would once again take home first place.
Outlet member Daionah Jordan said Outlet had its worries about the competition this year.
"The energy of the whole group and the crowd inspired us," Jordan said. "We knew we had to bring it for the competition. It was a tough spot this year."
Outlet was not the only group taking home an award for a third year in a row, Sigma Alpha Epsilon won the greek award once again.
Michael Humphrey, senior member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, said the fraternity had to work long and hard to bring home the prize.
"We had to out do ourselves from the past two years," Humphrey said. "They said they wanted to win again this year, and I said ‘How are we going to top ourselves? What are we going to do?' Hard work and dedication pays off."
The crowd favorite winner set themselves apart in a few different ways. BSU Elite had only five members, while some groups had as many as 20.
The all-male group danced to their mix of music with their own style that even included some moves from Michael Jackson.
Jenna Day, Air Jam chairwoman, said Thursday's event is a great opportunity for everyone involved.
"For groups, it is a way to win something by teamwork," Day said. "In the crowd, you can still yell for organizations you aren't apart of just because they are putting on a good performance. It brings the whole university together."
