SWIMMING AND DIVING: Ball State dominates relay invitational

While the Ball State men's and women's swimming and diving teams turned in comfortable wins on Friday, Saturday morning's victories in the Ball State Relay Invitational were of the dominant variety.

Men's coach Bob Thomas said his relay squad's win 204-154 against Evansville was even more impressive than its victory the night before.

"I actually thought we had a better meet today," Thomas said. "Everyone had four or five relays, which is a lot of competition in a short period of time, but we were getting faster by the end of the meet."

Thomas also mentioned relay meets help the coaching staff identify individual strengths within the relays.

"I get to see different aspects of different swimmers and we can use that knowledge going forward," he said.

The Cardinals began the meet with three straight wins coming in the 300-yard butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke relays. They also recorded wins in the 200- and 400-yard medley relays and the 1500-yard freestyle relay.

The women's team piled up 258 points, dismantling Evansville (148 points), IUPUI (74), and Butler (28).

"Going undefeated after the first weekend boosts the morale for everybody," women's coach Laura Seibold-Caudill said. "We dominated, no doubt."

Domination may be too mild a phrase, as the Cardinals won 13 of the 14 events on the women's side. The list of victories looks like this:

-300-yard butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke relays

-200-, 400-, 500-, 800-, 1000- and 3000-yard freestyle relays

-One-meter and three-meter diving

-200- and 400-yard medley relays

Both coaches pointed out the camaraderie built in relay competition is something special in the normally individual sport of swimming.

"It's just more enjoyable for everybody to swim as a team," Thomas said.
