State police warn drivers to be alert for deer

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana State Police are warning drivers to be on the lookout for deer because the harvest season has arrived early.

State police say more deer are crossing roads as they move from field to field during harvest season.

Last year there were 16,225 vehicle-deer crashes reported in Indiana. Police said these crashes can kill or injure drivers or passengers and cause thousands of dollars in damages.

State police recommend using high-beam headlights at night when possible. They also warn that if drivers see one deer, more might be nearby.

Police say people involved in collisions with a deer should not touch the animal because a frightened or wounded deer can seriously injure people.
