Homecoming 2010 gave the Ball State community quite the show, with events happening every night.
Chanel Richards, Homecoming general chairwoman, said this year's effort targeted Ball State in different ways.
"Each event is different, so it brings different kinds of people," Richards said. "People who have more of a refined taste go to Talent Show because they want to hear good music and talent. People who want to dance and be loud go to Air Jam. I think we did a good job at targeting all kinds of people."
The Opening Day Ceremonies were held Monday at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. Participants played dodgeball, tug-of-war, rock-paper-scissors and relay races after a short pep rally. At 9 p.m., everyone filed over to LaFollette Field for fireworks.
The big event Tuesday night was Talent Search. Freshmen Krystal Worrell took home the overall award for her rendition of "Listen" from the musical and movie "Dreamgirls". Worrel was awarded $1,000 in scholarship prizes from the Alumni Association. All category winners won a $500 scholarship.
The "Pimp My Grill" tailgating contest was cancelled after only seven teams signed up. The contest could not go on without at least 10 participants.
The $750 worth of prizes donated by Sport Clips for the tailgating contest were transferred to the flag football championships, held Wednesday at Scheumann Stadium.
At the championships, the audience watched three games instead of just the final game as last year. The semifinals were played directly before the championship game.
Pi Beta Phi/Phi Sigma Kappa took home a brand new grill as champions. Kappa Delta/FIJI took second place, winning a cooler filled with snacks for today's football game.
Thursday was one of Homecoming's most anticipated events. Air Jam was held in John R. Emens Auditorium as a sold-out show once again. Outlet, a hip-hop dance group, won the independent and overall categories for the third year in a row.
The traditional Bed Race was held Friday. Alpha Tau Omega Team Two won the overall award with a time of 12.97 seconds. Best costume was won by the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association for dresses as the Fruit of the Loom fruit.
Today, a parade is being held with 30 campus entries and 25 community entries. Entries can come in the form of cars, walkers, golf carts and floats.
Richards said she is looking forward to the parade because people outside of the Ball State campus can participate.
"A lot of alumni can come because it is on a Saturday," Richards said. "It is a great way to get people excited and to bring everyone together."
The football game will be held today at noon against Western Michigan in Scheumann Stadium.
Meaghan Sigman, Homecoming publicity chairwoman, said the turnout was good this year despite the publicity efforts being difficult at times.
"It is difficult on such a large campus to get the word out," Sigman said. "We did through Facebook and flyers like every other year. We were pleased with attendance."
