Pence stops at Muncie; Democrat holds meet and greet with students

Congressman Mike Pence came to speak at a rally for fellow Republican Doug Eckerty while Democratic candidate for the Indiana State Treasurer Pete Buttigieg spoke to Ball State voters passing through the Scramble Light on Thursday.

The state treasurer candidate teamed up with University Democrats as part of "Better Know Your Ballot," an initiative to educate students on who they should vote for Tuesday.

"A lot of times we hear students say that they don't vote because they don't know who is running, so we're trying to change that," said Nolan Born, University Democrats president.

Buttigieg said he was at Ball State to speak with students, give out free hot dogs, make new friends and hopefully pick up a vote or two. He said he's worked with a network of young Democrats and other people who are involved in their communities, adding that they've all inspired him.

"Students have the most on the line. It's their future," he said. "No one has a bigger stake in the future than the youngest voters. Young voters were a force in 2008, and it's very important to keep that up going into 2010."

Eckerty is running for the Indiana Senate seat in the 26th District. Despite the rally starting nearly 30 minutes late Thursday, almost 100 people came together for the outdoor gathering.

Pence began his tour Wednesday, promoting voting for the midterm election on Tuesday. He said students play a important role in this year's midterm election.

"[Students voting in the midterm election] is critical," Pence said. "College seems to be a time when people realize you don't have to wait to become involved as a citizen."

Mike Thomas, technology chairman for College Republicans, said there is plenty of room for involvement for those who are looking to help before Tuesday's election.

"If they still want to be active, there is a lot that needs done," Thomas said. "I know a couple of candidates that need some walking done for them. We're handing out stuff on Friday and on Monday at the Scramble Light."
