Lady Gaga, Snooki, the Mad Hatter invade costume choices

Halloween choices reflect popular movie, television and music scene

There are going to be a lot of celebrities walking around campus for Halloween.

Experts are expecting pop culture personalities to have a big influence on Halloween costumes this year. Research from the National Retail Federation points to the highest Halloween turnout since 2003. The NRF also expects more than 40 percent of people to "dress to impress" for the holiday.

"We expect 2010 to be the year of the costume," said NRF spokeswoman Kathy Grannis in an article from the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette.

MTV's "The Jersey Shore" is expected to be a major hit for costumes with Nicole "Snooki," Mike "The Situation" and DJ Pauly D being fan favorites. Lady Gaga will also be a popular look.

The allure of dressing as Lady Gaga for Halloween comes from her reputation for unconventional looks. Her use of wigs and hairstyles, avant-garde outfits and heavy accessories make it easy for students to create their unique Gaga look from their own wardrobe.

Other popular choices include characters from Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland," such as the Mad Hatter and Alice, Jake Sully and Neytiri from "Avatar," Mario and Luigi, Harry Potter and his various friends and enemies, and the "Twilight" cast.

For those of you who still need a last-minute costume, here are some ideas that are easy to make yourself. They may be a little wacky, but if you pull it off, it will be a costume to remember.

Crash-test dummy

You'll need sweats, tape, bandages, fake blood (optional), webbing, an old buckle and a safety pin. Tape the outline of the crash-test dummy on the sweats, and then use the webbing, buckle and pin to make a seat belt. Tape the seat belt across the outlined sweats. For some added flair, you can use the bandages and blood for decoration.

Cereal killer

You'll need a T-shirt (preferably plain white), several empty cereal boxes, plastic knives, red paint and tape or glue. First, cut slits into the cereal boxes. Glue or tape the plastic knives into the slits. Next, drip red blood so it looks like it is running from the slits. Finally, attach the cereal boxes to the T-shirt.

Infomercial host

This one is wide open, and it's a good option for a couple's costume. Just dress up like any desired infomercial host and find a product you wish to promote, real or not. The creativity points come from the product you're endorsing.
