Former student dances for 6 hours at Dance Mania

Students, families and the BSU community stepped up to the challenge at the Ball State Museum of Art Dance Mania competition to celebrate its 75th year on Saturday.

Former Ball State psychology major Jessie Shaffer took home the $250 prize. She danced continuously from 12:40 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Shaffer attended BSU from 2001 until 2004.

Tania Said, curator of education for the museum, said Shaffer had no problems dancing for nearly six hours, on account that she is a hairdresser and spends all day on her feet anyways.

"I wish more people would have came," Shaffer said. "I just danced and danced. It was just fun."

Two performers also gave participants something to dance to at the contest about 4 p.m. Said explained the first artists, Jim Gedda, is comparable to Johnny Cash with old-time songs.

Miles Orrwig was a performer at the dance-off. During Homecoming week, Orrwig won a $500 scholarship at the Talent Search competition as the instrumental winner.

Said said despite a smaller turnout than expected, all participants stayed enthusiastic.

"We had a smaller showing than anticipated, [but] everyone seemed to have a great time," she said.

Prizes were also given away from various companies that donated coupons: TIS Bookstore, Pizza Hut, Pizza King, BSU Dining, Marsh Supermarkets and Tan You Very Much.

Although BSUMA Dance Mania was during Family Weekend, the event was to thank students for making the Museum of Art a success for 75 years.
