Fire alarm at Air Jam set off by talcum powder

Firefighters responded to an alarm about 10:55 p.m. at John R. Emens Auditorium on Thursday during the sold-out Air Jam event, though no one was ordered to evacuate the building.

The alarm was set off by talcum powder used by one of the acts.

Students at Emens said the Air Jam music was so loud they couldn't hear the fire alarm. Freshman Courtney Stephens said her ears were throbbing when she left the auditorium.

Cpl. Craig Hudson from the University Police Department was one of two officers patrolling the lobby during the lip syncing and dance competition. Nobody could hear the alarm inside, but that was not a problem, Hudson said. He said he knew it was set off by powder used in one of the final acts.

Junior Jimmy Snyder was one of the few students who noticed the fire alarm.

"I started to leave, but they said, ‘Sit back down,'" he said.
