Door-to-door can drive helps Second Harvest

A small group of Ball State students spent their Friday afternoon with TCOMuncie going door to door collecting canned food to help support Second Harvest Food Bank in Muncie.

Deborah Hoe, a graduate assistant who led the food drive this afternoon, said this kind of volunteerism is important to get undergraduate students out into the community.

"Many people fail to realize its not just about helping another person, a lot of it has to do with developing yourself as a person and dedication to a particular cause and a commitment of time," Hoe said. "It will eventually prove it's worth when you go to apply for a job. Assume you have two people with the same qualifications the person with a lot of volunteerism on their resume will probably get hired.

TCOMuncie is a division of the Ball State University telecommunications department that encourages undergraduate students to get involved with philanthropy projects and to get involved in the Muncie Community.

Freshman telecommunications major Katelyn Calhoun collected cans with TCOMuncie. She said with the holiday season approaching, philanthropy events like this are more important than ever.

"It feels really good, and it's nice to be apart of collecting," Calhoun said.
