Dogs donned costumes for 'Howl-oween' event

The MT Cup hosted event raised money for the ARF animal shelter

The pets of Ball State students and Muncie residents are getting in on the Halloween festivities. On Saturday dogs were seen around the Village in various costumes including an Ohio State football player, Miss America and a character from the movie Avatar.

The MT Cup hosted the second annual "Howl-oween" dog costume contest. Participants were asked to pre register, paying a fee of $5. All of the proceeds go toward ARF, Muncie's only non-profit, no-kill animal shelter.

Many of the people who participated were Ball State students.

Leah Byers, a freshmen elementary education major, brought her chihuahua out to the event dressed as "The Queen of Hearts."

"My mom was the one who told me about the event. It's for a good cause and I thought it would be fun to dress her up because she is so tiny," Byers said.

Leisha Sigler, a junior entrepreneurship major, took three of her pets out to the event.

"One of my dogs is a scary baseball player, my other one is a squirrel, and my other one is pumpkin. I think it's a great way to get your animals off campus and get out of your house or apartment to meet other dogs and stay socialized," Sigler said. "Let them make new friends and have experiences outside of their house."

One by one, each dog's name would be called and they would walk across the patio of the MT Cup to be viewed by the audience and judges. The dogs were judged in presentation, costume and creativity. The winner received a gift certificate from the MT Cup and a trophy.

Joe Young, a senior music education major, said he knew about the event because he works in the Village and saw it being advertised. He said that the main reason for the event was to have fun and support a good cause.

"It's fun and it's a break from everyday work. If you get to have fun dressing you dog up and raise money for ARF, then what's the problem?" Young said.

Toola Majeed, a junior public relations major, was in charge of the event. This is her second year participating.

"I just love ARF. I got my dog from ARF, so I think it's good to raise money for them," Majeed said.

Byers's chihuahua took the first place trophy at the end of the day, but all of the dogs got to snack on free treats while all of the owners took home pumpkins decorated as puppies.
