Cyclists collide in front of LaFollette

Two cyclists hit each other in front of LaFollette Complex, sending one to Ball Memorial Hospital.

Freshman nursing major Paige Engmark said she was walking outside LaFollette around 11 a.m. Tuesday when she heard the bikes collide.

"I turned and saw them both hit the ground hard," she said. "They both hit their heads."

Engmark said she and freshman elementary and special education major Kelby Sankey quickly recognized their friend freshman Kate Pemberton as one of the cyclists.

"She was really lucky because she hit her head on her backpack instead of the pavement," Engmark said.

Engmark and Sankey held Pemberton's hand and tried to talk her down as she laid on the ground waiting for an ambulance.

"We were trying to keep her calm and from hyperventalating," Sankey said. "There were a lot of people [around] so I figured she would want someone around who she knew."

Engmark said Pemberton was concious, but she complained that her head hurt.

"She was really confused. I think she was more upset and scared than anything, though," Engmark said.

Engmark said the EMT said he thought Pemberton was going to be OK, but took her to the hospital for observation just in case.

The other cyclist in the accident declined to comment.
