Central Indiana cop cyclist killed in hit-and-run

NEW CASTLE, Ind. — A funeral is planned Tuesday for an Indiana police officer killed when a hit-and-run driver hit him as he rode his bicycle at night.

Thirty-two-year-old William Phillips was on an exercise ride with two other officers on an unlit stretch of U.S. 40 early Thursday about 25 miles east of Indianapolis when he was hit.

Phillips was a member of the Greenfield police department.

The Indianapolis Star says a visitation is scheduled Monday afternoon and evening at Greenfield-Central High School, with a funeral at the school the next morning.

Henry County Sheriff Butch Baker has said investigators were going to talk with a woman who was considered "the best lead" in the case.
