Shafer Tower won't be chiming for the next few weeks while parts are being ordered to fix some of the electrical equipment.
Employees of Smith's Bell and Clock Service was on campus Monday around 11 a.m. to check out the wiring problems and to silence the bells.
"It needs new control equipment, but the bells are in good shape," said J.J. Smith, owner of Smith's Bell and Clock Service.
Smith said he noticed the problem last week when the company gave tours of the clock during Family Weekend, but he didn't have time to come check out the damage until today. Smith's company is based in Moorsville, Ind. and services clock towers all over the Midwest.
Smith said he isn't sure how much to bill the university, but he'll have an estimate later in the week.
