Ball State's Alcohol Awareness Week begins

Ball State's annual Alcohol Awareness Week starts today with the "Watch your Friend's Back!" campaign, tying the theme to the on-campus death of an Indiana University student a few weeks ago.

Matt Whitlock, president of Student Government Association, said the week of events is a continuation of the Circle of Hope ceremony the university held Sept. 23, where several organizations, students, faculty and staff members remembered college students who have died from drug- or alcohol-related causes.

"We started talking about alcohol awareness and talking about education, not about abstinence," he said. "I think it's geared more towards education risks that are involved with consuming alcohol."

The office of Health Education, SGA, Housing and Residence Life, the Counseling Center and the Office of Student Rights and Community Standards are co-sponsoring the week.

Whitlock said the university's goal is to inform students about the risks involved with alcohol so they are aware when going out.

"I want everyone to be more aware about what they consume," he said. "It's better than to assume people will stop drinking after going to these events. Students' safety is our number one goal."

The event starts today with a virtual bar in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the effects of their choice of beverages.

On Tuesday, the Health Education Office and University Police Department will test students' driving while wearing "drunk goggles."

On Wednesday in the Atrium, there will be tic-tac-toe games along with questions related to alcohol consumption.

The final event, on Thursday, will show multiple viewings of "Tell Me Something I Don't Know," a documentary on student Scott Krueger's death from alcohol poisoning in 1997. The movie teaches students how to better watch out for their friends. Students will be invited afterward to the virtual bar again.
