Student Volunteer Services attracts more than 500 volunteers

Students from all majors and backgrounds filled the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Ballroom to look at opportunities for helping the community, and Student Voluntary Services registered 505 students at Wednesday's recruitment fair.

Kathy Smith, assistant director of SVS, said she expects the number of students registering will go up over the next few days. She said she was glad the turnout of students was about the same as last year and that the number didn't decline.

Many students turned out to sign up for volunteering that involved tutoring children. Molly Wantz, a classroom volunteer at Hazelwood Christian Preschool, said 25 volunteers signed up to help. Student volunteers at Hazelwood play with and entertain kids while the teachers get their work done.

Heather Daly, a sophomore pre-medicine student, signed up to volunteer at Marketplace Tutoring.

"I like tutoring and helping children learn more than just memorizing facts and numbers for a test," she said.

Daily also signed up to volunteer at Ball Memorial Hospital because of her major.

Alpha Chi Omega members Danielle Curnutte and Katie Scott signed up to volunteer at A Better Way and Afternoons R.O.C.K. They explained that they signed up to volunteer because it is part of being a member of a sorority.

A Better Way provides services for victims of abuse, transitional housing, a 24-hour crisis hotline, a check-in service for senior citizens and after-school programs.

Afternoons R.O.C.K. is an after-school program designed to keep kids drug and violence free, according to its website.

Other chances to volunteer included working with senior citizens at the Alpha Center, an adult day service. Joann Heinen, the program and volunteer coordinator, said seven students signed up to volunteer, but it could always use more volunteers. Students who volunteer at Alpha Center can interact with senior citizens by playing music, playing games, reading the newspaper or even singing karaoke.
