Open Mic Night features various talents

The first Open Mic Night of the year, beginning at 9 p.m. in Pruis Hall, will highlight various talents and a diverse array of students with a wide range of musical styles.

Dillon Kimmel, vice president of marketing for the University Program Board, said if a student could only choose one event during the school year to discover the diverse talents Ball State has to offer, Open Mic Night is the way to go.

Open Mic Night is a series that has been running for a couple of years. Participants are given about 10 minutes to perform in a no-pressure environment, Kimmel said.

Participants may register at the door at 8 p.m. on a first come, first served basis.

Dianna Lampitt, assistant director for programs, said UPB plans to hold the event every three to four weeks this semester.

Ten to 15 acts are anticipated to perform each night, displaying talents such as acoustic music, slam poetry and stand-up comedy. In the past, upwards of 100 people were in the audience.

UPB tested the idea of an open mic night in the past and plans to promote the event more this semester.

"It's an event where the students can be part of the event rather than just getting free pizza and seeing what the event has for them," Lampitt said.

The next campus event planned by UPB is the Friday Night Filmworks showing of "Shrek Forever After" at 9 p.m. Friday in Pruis Hall.
