A first half of poorly played football yielded to the shootout some thought the Ball State-Liberty matchup might turn into and Stan Parrish wanted to avoid.
After trailing 17-3 at halftime, Ball State quickly got back into the game. Cornerback Charlie Todd returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown less than a minute into the second half. There would be plenty more scoring before the quarter was over and when the clock hit zero, Liberty was holding a 21-20 lead.
Quarterback Keith Wenning, who directed Ball State's two-minute drill in the first half stayed in the game and threw his first collegiate touchdown pass. The true freshman found tight end Aaron Mershman, a converted quarterback, for a 15-yard score.
The Cardinals started that drive with their best field position of the night following a blocked field goal, which was returned 22 yards by Jason Pinkston.
The Flames would respond to the Cardinals newfound offense when quarterback Mike Brown hooked up with Chris Summers for their second touchdown combination of the night. This one went for 65 yards on a slant route.
It was one of the Cardinals few mistakes on defense in the quarter. Safety Sean Baker also picked Brown off, and returned it 31 yards.
Wenning finished the quarter 10-for-13 for 114 yards and a touchdown. Cory Sykes leads the Cardinals with 65 rushing yards.
