FOOTBALL: Backup quarterback will continue to play

Stan Parrish decided to take it easy on Opening Night with Keith Wenning, his prized quarterback recruit.

Wenning directed the final series in Ball State's 27-10 victory against Southeast Missouri State on Thursday. But the true freshman did not throw a pass, instead handing off to running back David Brown five times.

Parrish wanted to let Wenning throw the ball, but was talked out of it by his assistants.

Kelly Page started for the Cardinals and played all but the final series. Page won his first game as a starting quarterback, solidly managing the game for Ball State. He completed 10 of his 17 passes for 85 yards. He also threw one interception.

Parrish said Page and Wenning will continue play throughout the season.

"We're going to need them both," he said. "I firmly believe that. I see [Wenning] playing every game."

Injury update

Parrish said safety Josh Howard separated his shoulder Thursday night.

Freshman Aaron Morris replaced Howard in the lineup, playing a bit more than Parrish intended. Howard did not record a tackle before leaving the game.

Parrish said wide receiver Otis Brown also suffered a shoulder injury in the first half, but returned to the game after halftime. Brown led the Cardinals with four receptions for 30 yards.
