Council meeting discusses expansion of Cardinal Cash system

At Thursday's Campus Council meeting, Kevin Thurman, vice chairman and sophomore telecommunications major, discussed his plans to expand Cardinal Cash on and off campus.

"People just don't know what Cardinal Cash is and where it can be used," he said.

Thurman, who serves as the chairman of the Cardinal Cash task force with 10 other members, said the expansion plans are divided into three main parts: the Village; across campus including athletic events, the John R. Emens Auditorium box office, library copy machines, laundry machines and Cardinal Lanes; and access to adding funds to Cardinal Cash.

"Currently, you can only take cash or a paper check to Lucina [Hall] to add money to your Cardinal Cash account. There is no way for online banking or credit card transfers or anything like that," Thurman said.

Sophmore nursing major Katie Bates said she has Cardinal Cash but rarely uses it because adding money is too complicated.

"If I want to add money, I have to write a check and take it in, instead of doing it online," she said.

Thurman met with the Bursar's Office this summer and reported that, as of July 21, there were 1,806 students out of approximately 20,000 students who used Cardinal Cash.

"The Bursar's Office didn't feel that Cardinal Cash is a program that students want to see changed or expanded by any means because of the lack of use of it," Thurman said.

Despite the numbers, Thurman said the Bursar's Office is interested in improving the program.

Thurman said he is working with Lynda Wiley, assistant vice president for Student Affairs and director of the Office of Student Life, on creating an 11-question survey about Cardinal Cash open to students, faculty and staff.

The survey will be distributed electronically through the Office of Student Life, hopefully within the next two weeks, Thurman said.

In the mean time, Thurman plans to visit hall councils, Residence Hall Association directors, greek organizations, local business owners, the Muncie Downtown Business Council and the Chamber of Commerce to tell them about his plans and promote new ideas.

Thurman's goal is to have a pilot program on campus by the Spring Semester. He said he wants to have Cardinal Cash in the Village and across campus by May 2012.
