CDC Director to speak at Ball State about health

Former Indiana State Health Commissioner Dr. Judith A. Monroe will be speaking at the Ball State Alumni Center at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The Ball State Department of Physiology and Health Science is presenting the event. Monroe has built up an illustrious résumé in the field of health services as she has held several national public health leadership positions.

Monroe served as the Indiana State Health Commissioner since 2005. A number of state health improvements were evident throughout her tenure at the position. Indiana's national obesity ranking dropped from most obese at 50th in the nation in 2003 to 28th in 2009.

In May 2010, Monroe was presented the MVP award by Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning on behalf of the Peyton Manning Children's Hospital because of her dedication to improve the health of children.

Monroe currently holds the position of deputy director for the Centers for Disease Control. Tonight's speech is titled "Perspectives on Health Prevention."
