Three BSU grads receive alumni awards

The Ball State Alumni Association named three graduates to receive the 2010 Distinguished Alumni Award.

This year's awards were given to James Heath Gooden, of Muncie; Michael Johnston, of Muncie; and John Surovek, of Palm Beach, Fla.

The award, which is the Alumni Association's highest recognition, was created in 1959 to recognize alumni who demonstrated loyalty to Ball State and the association and who have made significant contributions to their profession, community or society.

Gooden graduated from the Miller College of Business with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1954 and from the College of Architecture and Planning in 1971 as a member of its first class with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. Upon completion, he founded Gooden Associates in 1972, which is now GEA Architects. He retired in 1996.

Johnston received a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1977 and a master's degree in marketing in 1981, both from Ball State.  He retired in 2007 after serving three years as chief operating officer for Manufacturers Transport Inc., a family-owned truckload motor carrier operating in 30 states.

Surovek holds a bachelor's degree in visual arts from Ball State after graduating in 1968. He earned a master's degree from Notre Dame and has studied at the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University. He is the president and owner of John H. Surovek Fine Arts Inc. and the John Surovek Gallery in Palm Beach, Fla.

Distinguished Alumni Award recipients will be honored during Ball State's Homecoming Weekend, according to a Ball State press release. Doug Reddington, BSUAA chairman, will be presenting the awards at a recognition dinner Oct. 8 at the Alumni Center.
