HEAD: SVS offers ways to help students, community

Student Voluntary Services is holding a recruitment fair today from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the L.A. Pittinger Student Center Ballroom.
The recruitment fair gives students a chance to sign up for the volunteer work at agencies from the Muncie community.
Kathy Smith, assistant director of SVS, said students will have the opportunity to talk with representatives from various organizations. Students can get to know the functions of the job they would perform if they decided to volunteer at an organization, Smith said, and students can learn about what the agency does on an everyday basis.
Smith said she expects about 500 students to register for volunteer work at the recruitment fair and that the number will grow over the course of the year.
Last year, SVS had 1,611 students placed with agencies around the Muncie community.
The total number of Ball State students who volunteered last year was 7,566. This number included students volunteering through SVS, students volunteering through student organizations and service learning courses.
Smith said students seem to enjoy working with children and animals the most.
"Tutoring is very popular among students probably because the amount of education students at Ball State," Smith said.
