SGA welcomes Ball State students

Student Connection is leading this year's student body as the executive branch of the Student Government Association.

SGA is a group of students elected by the Ball State student body to represent students' interests and concerns.

During its time in office since March 24, the slate has already completed some of its platform points.

Student Connection began its term by setting the SGA budget, naming a campus-wide philanthropy and debating bylaw revisions.

However, the work didn't stop over the summer. During the summer, the slate has worked on their community night proposal.

"This summer was more of a planning period for us. We really focused on what we were going to for our community night," Vice President Whitney Hamblin said.

Ball State has had community nights in the past but nothing in recent years. Student Connection wanted to change that by inviting the community to a home football game.

"We are going to gear it towards the kids in the community and Muncie residents. We are going to have moon bounces, game booths, face painting lined up for community night," Hamblin said. "Our biggest thing is to pull in the surrounding community and get them involved with Ball State."

Not only is Student Connection working on accomplishing its platform points, it is keeping true to promises made at the end of last semester.

Kayla Pickersgill, president pro tempore, plans on using her position to educate senators.

The began by sitting down with the committee chairs last term to start the introduction to SGA.

"I'm going to call it SGA 101: An Intro to SGA," Pickersgill said. "I'm going to stress that this is a process. I want senators to be familiar with the role they play, who they represent and what their role is as a senator. I want them to realize their potential as senators."

President Matthew Whitlock stressed the importance of the student body being involved with SGA and keeping Student Connection on track with its platform points.

"We want you to hold us accountable," Whitlock said.

SGA will hold its first meeting of the school year Sept. 8.
