Lugar: Daniels should run in 2012

(AP) —  Republican Sen. Richard Lugar said he'll urge Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels to run for president and that he believes President Barack Obama will not win reelection in 2012.

The six-term Indiana senator criticized Obama's performance at an Indianapolis luncheon Thursday, saying the president has led the nation "to the pits of despair" by advancing an ambitious domestic agenda instead of encouraging private-sector job growth.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports Lugar will support Daniels if he decides to enter the 2012 race.

Daniels says he is not actively seeking the nomination but has agreed to keep an open mind about a presidential run.

Lugar was featured in an Obama campaign commercial in an attempt to show that Obama was willing to work in a bipartisan manner.
