Sigma Kappa to host "Battle of the sexes"

"Everything you can do, I can do better" is the motto of the Battle of the Sexes, a new philanthropy event to support Alzheimer's research sponsored by Sigma Kappa sorority.

The event, held in Ball Gymnasium Sunday from 12:30 to 5 p.m., will bring friendly competition to Ball State University's campus.

In the past, Sigma Kappa held Aces High, a casino-inspired event, to raise money for its cause, but without much success. Raising around $1,000 in 2008 with a turnout of 30 to 45 people, the sorority decided to take a new approach.

Sigma Kappa had many options for a new event, but choosing one was a challenge. The deciding factor turned out to be mostly location and timing, but Sigma Kappa Foundation Committee Chairwoman Emily Colson said Battle of the Sexes brings a friendly competition to campus.

"Battle of the Sexes is very successful when we compared it at other universities," she said. "Aces High brings in a lot of guys and not many girls. We want to involve the whole community."

During the event, Ball Gym will be split into separate games where teams of men and teams of women will play against each other for three rounds. In each round, one game will be geared toward men's talents, one toward women's talents and one will be gender-neutral.

As teams rotate throughout the course, the winning teams will advance to the championship game, where the best male and female teams will face off in the last round — an obstacle course. There also will be awards handed out for the most creative team name and team uniform.

The Sigma Kappa Foundation provides scholarships to active student members and alumnae. The sorority also supports gerontology research, the study of aging, with a focus on Alzheimer's disease research.
