New campus council officers to move forward with Cardinal Cash project

Campus Council is getting closer to its goal of having Cardinal Cash in Village businesses and more places around campus.

With the election of officers yesterday, the group is hoping to seal the deal by May 2012. All the officers were elected without opposition.

Freshman Kevin Thurman, Campus Council vice president-elect, is heading a task force for expanding the use of Cardinal Cash. He's meeting with Kay Bales, vice president for Student Affairs, today to discuss it further.

"We're going to be discussing the plan overall and the feasibility of this option," he said.

One issue that's always been a snag in the planning process is the cost of the electronic computer system used to swipe the cards used for Cardinal Cash. Thurman said he doesn't know how much the systems will cost, but he hopes Bales or the Office of the Bursar will know.

"I think things are going in the right direction [by] working with all departments," he said.

Freshman Chad Griewank, next year's secretary of Campus Council, is looking forward to interacting with various student organizations.

"I've always wanted to get more involved on campus," he said. "We deal with it all."

Sophomore Mike Miller, Campus Council chairperson-elect, said he hopes to continue in the direction former Chairperson Matt Whitlock started.

"He established working closely with [Student Government Association] and focusing on a large amount of student-based issues," Miller said.

Whitlock and Miller have served two years on the council.

"We've done a lot more this year than last year," Miller said. "I knew it'd be a process."

For Whitlock, stepping down is a shift from chairperson to ex officio, or non voting, status. Whitlock said next year he'll mainly be representing the student body through SGA.

"It's been fun," he said. "It's been two years of fun."
