Furniture drive to help save Muncie curbs

Students looking to get rid of furniture before moving out for the summer can donate it to the Muncie Mission rather than littering street curbs with it.

The Office of Student Rights and Community Standards is having its second annual furniture drive after Finals Week.

Ball State University students who live on- or off-campus can drop off any gently used furniture at the St. Francis Newman Center's parking lot on the corner of Riverside and New York avenues.

Graduate assistant Veronica Matthews at the Office of Student Rights said the drive will be May 7 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and May 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

"We hope it will give students the desire to contribute items to the Muncie Mission, instead of throwing them on the side of the street," she said. "This drive will hopefully give students a beneficial way to get rid of some of their gently used things."

Matthews said the places on campus to leave furniture aren't enough to accommodate all the stuff students throw out.

"There are a few spots on campus where students can leave their furniture, but they are small and, consequentially, they start to leave stuff on the road," Matthews said.

Along with the Office of Student Rights, Student Government Association and the Residence Hall Association will help with the drive.

Freshman Kyle Thomas said he will be donating a few items next week.

"I thought I'd try and get some money for my table," he said, "but I don't think I will, so I'll probably donate it."

Jason Cupp said he'd donate some of his old things.

"I have some crap I don't use, so I might take it down there," he said. "If I'm not using it, maybe somebody else can."

Cupp and Thomas are just a few examples of students who are looking to do their part to help keep Muncie's curbs clean.

"I'd love for a large turnout so we can show how much Ball State supports the Muncie Mission," Matthews said. "Whatever we get, the mission will donate to families in need."
