Civic Theatre presents "High School Musical"

Show has had high rate of attendance, cast of mostly Ball State students

Downtown Muncie is going back to high school. Last weekend, the Muncie Civic Theatre premiered its adaptation of the popular Disney Channel movie "High School Musical" to "awesome" attendance, said director Marty Grubbs. On opening night last Friday, Grubbs said about 280 people came to see the stage version of the television movie that became an enormous success in 2006. The following Saturday saw about 250 audience members. Grubbs said these numbers are rare for an opening weekend.

At the Civic Theatre, plays normally debut to slow attendance that gradually increases through the weeks, he said. The play will continue tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. Grubbs said tickets sales this week have been "steady."

"High School Musical" centers around the lives of a group of students from the fictional East High. Lead characters, Troy, the schools basketball star and Gabriella, a math whiz find love as the student body prepares for the school musical.

Ball State student Zachary Holzer portrays Troy in the Civic Theatre performance. Grubbs said Ball State students make up every lead in the play, except for the part of Gabriella, who is brought to life by high school student Lauren Donahue.

"It's going really great," said Grubbs. "We have a really talented cast, and everyone is feeling really great. It's getting better every night."

"High School Musical" begins its second weekend on the Civic Theatre tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. There will also be a performance Saturday night at the same time. The Sunday matinee will be at 2 p.m. Tickets are $18 for adults and $7 for students. The play will run until May 1.
