Ball State students prepare to move out of Muncie for summer

In less than two weeks school will be out. With that comes the daunting task of packing up rooms in the residence halls.

For some this may be easier said than done, but with the right advice, leaving campus can be a simple task.

The residence halls close at 6 p.m. May 8. By that time students are to have been moved and checked out.

Assistant Director of Housing and Residence Life Ro-Anne Royer Engle said the best time students could start packing up was Spring Break, which she said was a perfect time to take back any winter clothes that students may have.

Engle said if students can take a little bit home at a time, it will be much easier for them to gain access to carts and the elevators. This way the students will not have to deal with large quantities of items all at once, but rather small amounts spread out over a period of time.

"[Students] underestimate the amount of things they have in their room," Engle said.

She also added students will oftentimes find out they've accumulated a large amount of items when they attempt to fit it all into their car.

Students, like freshman Hillary Steinmentz, have already begun the move-out process. She said she has already taken boxes of clothes home, but she added that she still has a lot of packing to do.

A helpful tip Steinmentz has heard about moving out is to not get caught up in sorting, which can be taken care of after the move.

John Vellenga, a freshman, said while he has not done a lot in way of packing, he is mentally going over everything that needs to be done. He said one of his concerns is just making sure he has enough room in his car for things he is taking home.

Making sure to set up a forwarding address for mail and changing any credit card addresses are important things to do, and Engle said students often forget to do so until they have left campus.

The more students can pay attention to deadlines and other timelines set up by halls, the less likely they are to forget any last minute things, she said.

For information on moving out, students can always ask the resident assistants, hall directors or assistant hall directors.

When it comes to actually moving out, though, students will have to do that work on their own, but they can always ask neighbors for some help.
