Ball State student elected president of Ind. College Democrats

The Indiana College Democrats elected a Ball State University student president of the organization last weekend.

Junior gender studies major Andrea Watts was elected president of ICD at the annual convention at Purdue University.

Watts said she served on the organization's executive board last year and it inspired her to run for president.

"Last year I served as the communications director and that got me interested in more positions so I thought I would run," she said. "I thought having a position at the state level could help our college chapter and make it stronger."

Purdue University, Indiana University and the University of Notre Dame are Indiana's most active College Democrats chapters, Watts said. Her job as president includes getting all of Indiana's chapters active and working together.

"I look at [being president] as a great opportunity to engage college students," she said. "College Democrats registered 36,000 voters in 2008 and Barack Obama won the election in Indiana by 26,000 votes. It shows you what a difference we can make."

About 70 students from across Indiana attended the convention. Watts said she beat an IU student for president even though more students from IU attended the convention.
Watts said her experience at Ball State contributed to her becoming president of ICD.
"I would have to say it was my previous experience [that got me elected,]" she said. "I think it was my experience and knowing how the organization worked."

"I think that Ball State has helped," she said. "Just from being in classes, feeling empowered by the students and by Ball State University Democrats."
