Authorities seize photos from student newspaper

HARRISONBURG, Va.— Authorities have seized photos from James Madison University's student-run newspaper that were taken during a weekend block party marred by fights and the arrests of more than 30 people.

Katie Thisdell, editor-in-chief of The Breeze, says up to a dozen police officers led by Rockingham County's commonwealth's attorney raided newspaper's offices on Friday.

An attorney from the Student Press Law Center says the search likely violated a federal law that prohibits the search newsrooms for unpublished newsgathering materials.

Harrisonburg police said officers used pepper spray and tear gas to disperse a crowd of about 8,000 people that gathered for an annual open air party called Springfest. During the event, fights broke out and some partygoers threw bottles and rocks at officers.
