5K to raise money for MS

The Ball State University community can help raise money for disease research while getting a good workout this weekend.

The Exercise Science Club is organizing the Jeff Clevenger 5K Run and Walk Saturday morning at the Alumni Center.

Daniel Clevenger, president of the club, said the run and walk is named in honor of his father.

He said Jeff Clevenger recently passed away after a long battle with multiple sclerosis. The club has wanted to organize a 5K run and walk for a while now, but they didn't want it to be a fundraiser for the group; they wanted it to be for a good cause. Raising money for research of the disease is something close to his heart, he said.

"I just wanted to do a little event in memory of him as well," Clevenger said.

Jeff Clevenger worked at the recently closed Borg Warner plant in Muncie and lived in Yorktown. Daniel Clevenger said he had a great affect on the two areas. He was a hard worker despite his disease, he was a great father and had the respect of his co-workers and people in those communities.

He also wanted to do the event because his mother works on campus as an elementary education professor.

"I thought it would be a nice way to honor her," Clevenger said. "She was a really good wife even though he faced a lot of adversity. I thought it would be neat to do it on BSU's campus where she's really involved and a lot people know her as well."

He said the club has been organizing the event since September and working to get local businesses to sponsor it. Several companies have stepped up to help fund the event.

This is the first 5K the Exercise Science Club has organized, so members struggled at times to get everything done right, Clevenger said. He relied a lot on the Sports Administration Department, which organizes the Chase Charlie 5K every year, to help out. People from the department helped members of the club work to get street closures and enlist help make sure the event runs smoothly.

About 160 people have registered, and he said he hopes a lot of people will register the day of the event. He wants at least 200 or 250 people to participate. However, that will depend on how well the club marketed the race and how the weather is, he said.

Registration is from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. Saturday at the Alumni Center. The race will start at about 7:45 a.m.

The route will start on Bethel Avenue, go south on McKinley Avenue to Riverside Avenue and then west to Briar Road. He said the route will continue through that neighborhood past the president's house before taking Petty Road back to McKinley Avenue then back to the Alumni Center.

Those streets will be closed from about 7 to 10 a.m.
