Student designers show off their style

A semi-circle of chairs, two runways angled from the stage and a long red curtain transformed Cardinal Hall into the setting for the Fashion Design Society's annual show.

Publicity co-chairman Marcelina Manuel said she was proud of how the show turned out. She said they were a little short-handed on models and like any other fashion show, people were always running around backstage.

"Once you get to where nobody can see you, you rush," Manuel said.

Sophomore Jaz Gray said she didn't know what to expect when she agreed to model a few pieces for the show, and she was impressed with the styles students had created.

"Everybody's going to have a good career ahead of them," she said.

Special Events Coordinator Sarah Cole said the group had to compromise with the L.A. Pittenger Student Center staff when it came to setting up the runway. Since they didn't have a full-length aisle on hand, it ended up consisting of two 30-foot aisles coming out at an angle from the stage.

Cole said it was her job to keep the decor, modeling and garments in good taste. Some of the designers modeled their own clothing, and Cole said doing this can be a big confidence booster.

"We had all shapes and sizes," she said. "We wanted to make it positive and upbeat."

The show consisted of various categories including spring style, children's clothing and lingerie. The theme "Electrified: Fashion Amped Up" was evident in the bright, bold styles of clothing including a blue polka dot blouse, a dress made of wire and various headbands made of candy wrappers and playing cards.

Manuel said one of her favorite pieces was a dress with hula hoops built into the underside of the skirt. A fog machine was also attached under the skirt for added effect.

Senior Amy Dodge sat in the audience as four of her pieces were displayed. She said she likes to see other students' creativity.

"It's more out of the norm than you'd expect in Muncie," she said.
