Sigma Kappa to have new charity event

Looking to attract all students at Ball State University, Sigma Kappa sorority will have a new event pitting men against women.

"Everything you can do I can do better," is the motto of the Battle of the Sexes, a new philanthropy event to support Alzheimer's research sponsored by Sigma Kappa sorority.

The event, from 12:30 to 5 p.m. April 25 in Ball Gymnasium, will bring friendly competition to Ball State's campus to benefit the Sigma Kappa Foundation and gerontology research.

Deciding between events such as Capture the Flag, Battle of the Sexes and a Skate-a-thon, sorority members knew they had to make changes to their event schedules.

In the past, Sigma Kappa held Aces High, a casino-inspired philanthropy event, to raise money for their cause, but without much success. Raising around $1,000 in 2008 with a turnout of 30 to 45 people, the sorority decided to take a new approach.

Sigma Kappa Foundation Committee member Kayla Dalton said members felt like they were not reaching their full potential with Aces High.

"With Aces High there wasn't much ... interest in the casino theme and it wasn't known very well around campus," she said.

Sigma Kappa had many options for a new event, but choosing one was a challenge. The deciding factor turned out to be mostly location and timing, but Sigma Kappa Foundation Committee Chairwoman Emily Colson said Battle of the Sexes brought a friendly competition to campus.

"Battle of the Sexes is very successful when we compared it at other universities," she said. "Aces High brings in a lot of guys and not many girls; we want to involve the whole community. We want more fun rather than sitting down and playing cards."

During the event, Ball Gym will be split up into separate games where teams of men and teams of women will play against each other for three rounds. In each round, one game will be geared towards men's talents, one game will be geared towards women's talents and one game will be gender neutral.

As teams rotate throughout the course, the winning team will advance to the final championship game, where the best male and female teams will face off in the last round — an obstacle course. There also will be awards are handed out for the most creative team name and team uniform.

The Sigma Kappa Foundation provides scholarships to active student members and alumnae. The sorority also supports gerontology research, the study of aging, with a focus on Alzheimer's disease research.
