Planning for Ball State Homecoming to start this week

Planning for next semester's Homecoming Week will begin this week.

The 2010 Steering Committee was announced last week and starting this week, it will hold meetings to talk about Homecoming Week's theme and events.

Although members of the committee expect the planning process to be stressful, they also think of it as an opportunity to get more involved in activities on campus, excecutive assistant Cailee Morris said.

"I know it can be stressful and there are a lot of people involved in the process but the outcome is very satisfying and it's really worth it," she said.

Morris is in charge of directly assisting other chairs, as well as making sure the committee communicates with other organizations participating.

"It's a lot but I'm sure the adviser would not have put me in a position I couldn't handle," she said.

Once students fill out an application they are interviewed by members of the alumni center.

Students must show a passion for Ball State, energy, involvement in other Ball State activities and be in good academic standing, director of alumni special events Michelle Johnson said.

"It's always hard to make the selection," she said. "Most of the time we end up with close to 40 candidates, so many seem to qualify."

For the process, Morris said she was nervous but felt she was qualified to be a member of this year's committee.

"I felt qualified, but I was nervous because I am a freshman and I knew there were other applicants with more experience on campus."

Morris has been planning homecoming events since she was in high school.

For some the experience has been a fun one since their first meeting, publicity chair Meaghan Sigman said.

"We had a lot of fun together, we talked about what we are going to work on this year and I was really excited about that," she said.

Sigman will be in charge of public relations and dealing with participating organizations.

"I was told that being a part of the committee is really fun, and I wanted to be behind the scenes," she said.

Committee members should take advantages of the opportunities presented to them through planning homecoming, Johnson said.

"Every year as an adviser I expect them to plan a great week of events, build relationships and get to meet and network with alumni," she said.

But at the end, the experience will be as rewarding as other opportunities.

"I can't wait for homecoming, so my family can come and see all the work I put in planning these events." Sigman said.
