Out-going slate Cardinal Impact reflects on its term in office

Tears fell and laughter filled the air as the departing Cardinal Impact imparted advice and handed the reigns over to Student Connection.

Family, friends and students packed the newly renovated Cardinal Hall in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center on Wednesday afternoon for the Student Government Association inauguration.

Former SGA President Beth Cahill looks at her time in office as a life experience.

"I have to look at this job in the context of my life," she said. "Being a little blonde girl from a small town in Ohio, even my dad said to a newspaper back home that this was something he wouldn't have expected from me. I ran because I love Ball State University. I love the students that call it home, and I look up to the leaders that come out of here."

SGA President Matt Whitlock took time during his speech to explain what direction Student Connection wants to take during the coming year.

"Over the course of our history, not as a school, not just as a nation, but as a race, we have found a truth that has stood the test of time," he said. "It is the youth of the world that leads the charge against injustice, inequality and unfair treatment that has stunted the growth and progress of humanity. Never has such a group had so much promise, so much opportunity and so much passion than the dedicated collection of students in this world."

Whitlock hopes to bring out the dedication, passion, promise and opportunity in his fellow senators and students.

Former Secretary Carson Lance said he acquired many different skills during his year in office and stayed true to other qualities of the secretarial position.

"I believe that I have gained a higher conflict resolution as well through this organization," he said. "Conflict may never be a feeling that anyone can wish upon himself, herself but there is something to say about that feeling of serenity after finding compromise."

Cahill fought back tears as she thanked and shared memories from her year as president.

"I didn't run for president because I'm some politico or because I think the governance system is just thrilling. I'll be the first to say I am not resting easy with work we've done or that I'm completely satisfied. There is still more to do," she said.

Student Connection's first senate meeting is Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.
