The local Census Office is offering up to $12.50 an hour to students willing to work in the Muncie area for two to six weeks.
Jim Accurso, media specialist with the Chicago Regional Census Office, said the Muncie office is still hiring land is looking to recruit 5,100 workers. The job lasts two to six weeks, in some cases starting in early April and lasting through early June.
Accurso said students will probably be hired as census takers. This job includes getting people to fill out forms that were not sent in during the mail-back campaign. He said workers are hired locally as part of a "trusted voices" census campaign. Students will be asked to go door to door around the same city block or neighborhood.
Accurso said students should anticipate working through the first week of June, but he hopes they won't be discouraged from applying.
The Census Office offers jobs as a local clerk, traveling clerk, supervisor or census taker. Scores from a 28-part, 30-minute placement test will determine a student's position. Sample tests are available on the U.S. Census Bureau Web site.
Later this month, students will receive census questionnaires by mail. Kay Bales, vice president for Student Affairs, sent an e-mail to students saying it's important residents be counted where they live for most of the year.
