Surrounded by superstition, tarot cards evoke a feeling of the unknown and mysterious. However, for Sherita Campbell, long-time psychic Muncie resident, tarot cards are a source of inspiration and hope to those seeking her help in their lives.
"Too many people don't have anything other than they go to work and they go home. They have no passion," she said.
Born into a family that embraced its Native American and Celtic roots through meditation and visions, Campbell had no problem finding her own passion. She was given her first set of tarot cards at a young age and soon found the cards to be her medium through which she read people's past, present and future.
"The cards tell you what's going to happen and what you should work through… It gives a path to follow," she said.
A Ball State University graduate, she has since provided professional tarot readings through her business Tarot by Sherita.
Following the simple projections that tarot provides, Campbell's approach in her practice is to tell a client exactly what she sees — unless she feels they are unable to assimilate the full impact of some misfortune if told outright.
"A lot of people come to me with a lot of really tricky things. I have a few tarots of people that [… have] a lot of simplistic stuff. But I also have a lot of people who I refer to therapists and I have a lot of people who therapists refer to me," Campbell said.
Using her staunch belief that love and forgiveness are the unifying forces of the universe, Campbell uses a mixture of intuition and discussion with her clients to help work through their problems. She has aided prisoners, prostitutes, people with depression and others using these methods.
Campbell admits she has been wrong on occasion. But she says people have also gone against her advice.
"They want magic," she said. "And the magic is within us and the magic is us finding how to grab hold of the power that flows through this earth and the universe to work our way to where we need to be. And it's hard. It's hard to forgive, it's hard to love and I think the tarot helps."
