Fashion Design Society to host 'Electrified' fashion show

Comparing the annual event to the popular Lifetime modeling show, sophomore Marcelina Manuel said she's looking forward to the fashion show at 7 p.m. today.

The Ball State University Fashion Design Society's annual show might not be right on par with "Project Runway," but it will be pretty entertaining, Manuel said.

The theme of the show is Electrified: Fashion Amped Up. Manuel said it's an opportunity for underclassmen to show off their designs. The upcoming April 18 showcase is mainly for seniors, she said.

Some of the most creative outfits were designed by students of Wearable Art, a design class offered by Ball State during the summer. Outfits include a dress made of brightly colored wire and one made of hula hoop rings.

Manuel said about 20 students will participate in the event, including designers, models and backstage crew. Spring fashion and lingerie are two examples of the categories students will be competing in. Some of the designers will also be modeling their own creations, and others are students who responded to FDS call-outs.

Looking back, Manuel said it's a good experience for freshmen to participate and build their confidence.

"It's such a great accomplishment as a freshman to be on stage," she said. "You learn a lot and it's great to hear people clapping for you."
