Emmy winner to give lecture on sound

An Emmy Award-winning instructor will lecture students, faculty and the Muncie community about using sound to improve storytelling.

Instructor of telecommunications Stan Sollars will give his lecture "We're Surrounded (by Sound)!" at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the David Letterman Media and Communication Building Room 125.

The lecture is sponsored by the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, one of the oldest nonprofit organizations that recognizes and promotes academic excellence in all aspects of higher education.

Sollars, along with four other team members, received an Emmy for his work as lead designer for the studio and production suites in the Letterman Building. He is also a senior producer and the voice of Indiana Public Radio's "Morning Edition" as well as a longtime Phi Kappa Phi member.

Sollars said in a February interview that Phi Kappa Phi is the most encompassing academic society on campus that encourages learning from all disciplines on campus.

"It's an organization that is very welcoming and celebrates the joy and pursuit of learning," he said.

He said he didn't want the presentation to be like a traditional lecture that would have him stand in front of the crowd talking without interaction.

"I want to open the door to the subject of sound so people can be open to a different type of media," he said. "We are picture conscious in film, but if the sound isn't right we are missing half the movie or concert, so I will show how to get everything out of your sound system."
