Campus Council brings old resolutions to the table

Campus Council's executive board discussed old Student Senate resolutions at its meeting Thursday, some dating back as far as 2008.

Matt Whitlock, chairperson of Campus Council and Student Government Association president-elect, said resolutions from the past couple years had been lost between slates until the SGA president pro tempore started

He said he's looking forward to having close working relationships between SGA and Ball State University Senate in the year ahead.

University Senate Undersecretary Melanie Turner said presenting Student Senate resolutions at Campus Council meetings is important because it's the first step of getting ideas through the university governance system.

Five resolutions were presented, and the group found most of them should be sent to Residence Hall Association to be reviewed.

SGA member Kayla Pickersgill said she knew at the time the resolutions were being written they were more relevant for RHA, but SGA wanted to create its own recommendations.

The first one addressed creating a student spouse and partner card and student spouse and partner support group. The card would allow the spouse or partner access to athletic events, Student Life events and theater events.

The resolution was written by the Student Senate last February and University Council Chairwoman Laura Helms said she wasn't really comfortable with it.

"When Campus Council presents ideas that deal with university processes, I get nervous," she said. "I don't know how much research went into this idea."

The resolution will be sent back to SGA for further review.

Resolutions redirected to RHA include a computerized night staff security system and extended hours in the residence hall workout rooms.

Lynda Wiley, assistant vice president for Student Affairs, said she remembers when those resolutions were being written last year.

"I told them SGA has no authority to make this happen," she said.

The Student Academic Ethics Policy was also discussed, but no action was taken. Assistant Provost Jacquelyn Buckrop said the policy calls for identifying students who repeatedly abuse rules and ethical issues such as plagiarism.

This was the last meeting for the executive committee. The meeting next month will be run by the new slate, which will be voted on through SGA.
