Bayh donates $1m to help Ind. Democrats keep seat

INDIANAPOLIS — Retiring Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh has contributed $1 million from his campaign funds to help the state Democratic Party in its quest to hold on to the seat.

Party officials say it is the largest donation ever by an individual not on the ballot.

Bayh announced in February that he would not seek re-election. He has more than $12 million available in his campaign account, which can be used to help his party or saved for a future campaign.

Bayh's retirement announcement came too late for any Democrats to file paperwork for the May primary. Second-term Rep. Brad Ellsworth has since said he will seek Bayh's seat and is expected to get the party's endorsement.

Ellsworth has served Indiana's eight district since 2007. Before serving the U.S. Congress Ellsworth worked in the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's office. He was elected Vanderburgh County Sheriff in 1998.

Bayh says the donation is a "million dollar vote of confidence" in Ellsworth and Indiana Democrats.
