For the third year in a row the Ball State University Debate Team has earned the national title for their skills in debate and persuasion.
Universities from all over the country came to the National Educational Debate Association's National Tournament last weekend at Bob Jones University in South Carolina.
Before blowing away the competition, the debate team practiced for weeks to get ready for the tournament.
"Our preparation put us over the edge," said Jonathan Bryant, debate team member and junior psychology major. "We worked together and met after each round to discuss how we can refute the arguments."
The topic for the national debate was whether the United State should reform the welfare system. The team was judged for persuasiveness and ability to debate effectively.
The tournament places teams into three different categories: varsity, novice and crossfire. Varsity and novice allow each team to be examined by the other, while crossfire allows for both teams to openly ask questions. The team received first place in varsity and crossfire and second place in novice.
